Thermarate

Thermarate, a forward-thinking energy-assessment firm specialising in nationally recognised energy efficiency reports for both residential and commercial buildings, has recently relocated to its new office at 216 Stirling Highway, Claremont. Known for its innovative approach to energy solutions, Thermarate needed a workspace that not only reflected its commitment to sustainability but also provided a modern and functional environment for its team. BHO Interiors was entrusted with the task of designing an office that captured these values, emphasising the use of environmentally friendly materials and fostering an open, collaborative atmosphere.

The brief for Thermarate’s new office focused on creating a space that embodied their core mission—delivering energy-efficient solutions. To align with these goals, BHO Interiors carefully selected sustainable materials throughout the design, ensuring that the office’s carbon footprint remained as minimal as possible. From eco-friendly flooring options to low-impact finishes, every element was chosen to reflect Thermarate’s commitment to sustainability. The result is a modern, stylish office that doesn’t just meet environmental standards but also sets an example for how commercial spaces can be both functional and green.

The open-concept design was another key aspect of the brief. We wanted to create a workspace that felt light, airy, and conducive to collaboration, breaking away from the traditional office layout of closed cubicles and compartmentalised rooms. The open design encourages communication and teamwork, allowing for a more dynamic work environment where ideas can flow freely. Large windows were incorporated into the design to let in natural light, further enhancing the sense of openness and reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day. The abundant natural light not only adds to the aesthetic appeal of the office but also promotes a healthier, more energising work environment.

As health and fitness are an important part of Thermarate’s company culture, we incorporated thoughtful touches that reflect their active, wellness-focused lifestyle. Instead of a traditional bar stocked with alcohol, we installed a bar fridge on the island bench dedicated to storing Kombucha and other healthy drinks. This unique feature underscores the company’s focus on well-being, creating a space where employees can enjoy a refreshing, health-conscious alternative during their workday. It’s these small but meaningful design choices that truly reflect the personality and values of Thermarate, making the office not just a place to work but an environment that supports the team’s overall well-being.

One of the most interesting design challenges we faced during the planning phase was the external zigzag walls of the building. While initially posing a spatial difficulty, these unique architectural features were cleverly incorporated into the overall design, adding character to the office and creating interesting visual lines that make the space feel dynamic and modern. Rather than seeing the walls as a limitation, we embraced them as an opportunity to add depth and movement to the space, ensuring that the office remained comfortable and visually engaging.

Although Thermarate’s office may be modest in size, it has been designed to maximize comfort and functionality. Every detail has been thoughtfully considered to create a workspace that feels both intimate and efficient, providing everything the team needs in a streamlined, elegant design. The carefully planned layout ensures that the space is easy to navigate, with designated areas for work, collaboration, and relaxation. By blending sustainability, modern design, and a focus on employee wellness, Thermarate’s new office is a true reflection of the company’s values and goals.
